We’ve all had those old school days when our mom’s tried everything in the world to get our heads lice free. Having lice in your hair can be a dreadful experience, not just for how you’re being judged, but for the discomfort it causes. Ever wondered if there is an easy way of getting your child’s head free of lice? Or perhaps your own? Well, you could get rid of those head lice with natural ingredients right out of your kitchen or your vanity.
Here is how you can get your Head Lice free naturally:
We all knew it was good for our skin and hair, but it is as much for getting rid of lice too. Warm three tablespoons of coconut oil, add camphor to it and massage the mixture on your scalp. Leave it overnight, preferably covering your hair with a shower cap. Shampoo your hair the next day and then comb with a nit comb. This procedure suffocates the lice, killing them eventually. Repeat the process daily for 5 days to eradicate lice completely.
Our grandmothers have insisted on Neem being an insecticide, and so it is. Grind neem leaves into a paste and apply it to your hair and scalp. When dry, rinse your hair, repeating the process every two weeks for two months. Not only will it help get rid of lice naturally but also heal any scalp irritation caused by scratching. You could also massage some neem oil on your scalp and hair and wash your hair after an hour. Once dry, comb the hair with a nit comb. Do this thrice a week for a month and see the lice vanish.
As weird as it may sound, it is one of the best natural treatments for lice. Petroleum jelly, or your very own Vaseline as you may call it, can have a stifling effect on lice by clogging their breathing holes, and making it impossible to survive the suffocation. All you ought to do is to apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly to your hair and scalp and then cover your hair with a shower cap, leaving it overnight. The next morning, use baby oil to remove petroleum jelly and then wash your hair thoroughly with a shampoo. Use a nit comb to comb through once the hair is dry. Do this weekly for a month or two and your scalp will thank you for it.
Lemon juice can work wonders for your nits and lice due to the acidic nature. What’s even better is that it can also help prevent lice infestation if you are at a higher risk due to surroundings and people around you. Apply fresh lemon juice to your scalp and leave it on for half an hour. Rinse off with vinegar and then lukewarm water. Using this treatment weekly will help prevent lice infestation.
If you are looking to eradicate lice, then mix a fine paste of four garlic cloves to a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. Apply on the head and massage around the scalp. Wrap your hair in a towel and leave in for an hour. Then rinse with water and shampoo your hair. Repeat consecutively for five days to kill head lice.
With that said, prevention is better than cure. Lice infestation happens mostly due to head-to-head contact as lice can survive no more than 24 hours when left outside your head. Thus, children often get their hair infested with lice at school, during slumber parties, or with sharing hair-brushes, combs, and towels.
For the more stubborn lice, there is often a need to resort to medicated oils or ointments like Malathion or Benzyl Alcohol Lotion. While these may be more effective, they have their side effects too and must be used only in extreme cases where natural treatments cease to help.
